| The Amguid Impact Crater |

Tanezrouft Voyages is glad to offer you the first organised trek to the Amguid Crater led by Chris Scott, the author of Sahara Overland.
If you’re inspired by the idea of exploring parts of the Sahara were few others have set foot: The Amguid Crater Trek is for you – a challenge suiting those with a spirit of adventure and a curiosity to discover the beauty of this little-known region.
We will traverse the extraordinary landscape of southern Immidir, crossing narrow canyons and desolate plains to arrive at our unique destination: the Amguid Crater at the foot of the lovely Erg Bou Zrafa.
The topography of the Immidir offers a great diversity of landforms: shady canyons carved deep into the plateau, tottering rock spires (or ‘tassilis’), caves, water holes or gueltas on which we will depend, as well as small dune formations.
Rainfall in the Immidir is relatively frequent, supporting a variety of flora and fauna. Throughout the region one also finds examples of rock art and artefacts like grinding stones – relics from Palaeolithic and Neolithic populations at a time when the Sahara was a grassy savannah.
Today no vehicle routes cross our itinerary, nor can they traverse the terrain over which we will navigate. Instead we use camels to carry our provisions, offering a traditional mode of desert travel and ensuring a tranquil passage through this remote corner of the Sahara where the near-extinct Moufflon or Barbary Sheep still roams the crags.
In total we will be on foot for 8-9 days, covering a modest 140km or so by walking about six hours a day, so leaving plenty of time to ourselfs.
We will walk with just a light day pack; camels will transport our baggage from camp to camp. Our Tuareg crew looks after your comfort and safety and some riding camels will be part of the caravan should one of us need a rest from walking.
